Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) Delegation Visits CORE

On April 22, 2026,a delegation led by Dr. Stephanie Riady, President of Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH), Indonesia, visited the Center for Ocean Research in Hong Kong and Macau (CORE) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to learn about the Center’s cutting-edge ocean research projects and exchange insights on regional marine science initiatives.

The visit provided a platform for both institutions to discuss shared interests in ocean sustainability, marine data platforms, and capacity building in the Asia-Pacific region. During the session, the CORE team presented the research project, especially its flagship project, WavyOcean – a high-resolution ocean circulation and wave modeling system developed by Prof. Jianping Gan, Director of CORE, along with his research team.

The UPH delegation gained an in-depth understanding of how WavyOcean integrates numerical modeling and observational data to support marine environment monitoring, climate change research, and blue economy development in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and beyond. The two sides also engaged in fruitful discussions on potential academic exchanges, joint research initiatives, and the application of ocean science for disaster risk reduction and coastal management in Indonesia.

The UPH representatives expressed strong interest in CORE’s research framework and data products, noting the relevance of such advanced modeling tools for Indonesia’s archipelagic environment. Both institutions agreed to explore future collaborative activities, including joint workshops, student exchange programs, and research proposals focused on regional oceanography.
