The 7th China-U.S. Arctic Workshop
The 7th China-U.S. Arctic Workshop was successfully held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) on 2-4 December 2024,. The workshop was jointly organized by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Tongji University, and co-hosted by Center for Ocean Research in Hong Kong and Macau (CORE), HKUST and Center for Polar and Oceanic Studies, Tongji University. The workshop was held under the theme “Arctic Cooperation between China and the U.S.: during Global Change and for Global Governance” and attracted experts and scholars from various industries to discuss the future of Arctic cooperation.
During the three-day workshop, the participants engaged in in-depth discussions on the following topics:
1. Sino-U.S. Arctic Sustainable Development Cooperation during Global Change and for Global Governance;
2. Sino-U.S. Arctic Climate Change Cooperation for Global Governance;
3. Sino-U.S. Arctic Waterway Development and Utilization Cooperation;
4. Sino-U.S. Arctic Cultural, Tourism, and Education Cooperation.
There were more than 30 participants from mainland and overseas joined the workshop, including experts from Legislative Council, Hong Kong SAR, China; Ocean Conservancy, USA; Polar Research and Policy Initiative, United Kingdom and scholars from various universities in mainland China and Hong Kong SAR.
During the workshop, participants exchanged and shared their research progress and experiences, and discussed the potential and challenges of China-U.S. cooperation in the Arctic field. In the face of the severe challenges posed by global change, cooperation between China and the United States in the Arctic is not only of significant practical importance but also offers new solutions for global governance.
The success of this seminar has further expanded the influence of CORE, which has highlighted its important role in connecting mainland China and international cooperation. We look forward to continually contribute to regional and national marine development through future exchanges and cooperation, while making a positive impact both domestically and internationally.
