Mr. Tam Yiu-chung visited CORE to discuss GBA - HK marine environmental challenges and sustainability
Mr. Tam Yiu-chung visited Center for Ocean Research in Hong Kong and Macau (CORE) to discuss Greater Bay Area - Hong Kong marine environmental challenges and sustainability as well as development and promotion of the linkages among mainland, Hong Kong/Macau and international marine science community
譚耀宗先生到訪港澳海洋研究中心，探討大灣區-香港海洋環境挑戰和可持續，以及發展和建設內地-港澳的國際化海洋科學和技術研究平台
Hong Kong’s sole deputy to the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, Mr. Tam Yiu-chung, visited CORE, HKUST, on 9 January 2023, together with newly elected Hong Kong delegate to the NPC Ms. Iris Wong Ping-fan, Legislative Council members Mr. Chan Hok-fung, Mr. Steven Ho Chun-yin and Mr. Holden Chow Ho-ding.
Prof. Nancy Ip, president of HKUST and Prof. Jianping Gan, Director of CORE welcomed the delegation and introduced the challenges Hong Kong marine water is now facing. Prof. Gan explained the marine hazards such as eutrophication, hypoxia and ecosystem impacts. Prof. Gan and the visitors discussed the current mega reclamation project, the potential environmental impact and optimizing scheme in Hong Kong waters.
Prof. Gan stressed that the management and adaption of marine development and sustainability in Hong Kong should be ocean science-based. Prof. Gan suggested that “as an international marine city, a major city along the ‘Belt and Road’ and the Greater Bay Area (GBA), Hong Kong should have world-class marine research institute to develop scientific understanding, develop management and adaption scheme of the ocean in Hong Kong and the GBA”.
Prof. Gan also pointed out that CORE has built a solid foundation and framework for consolidation and development of Hong Kong-Macau marine research, as well as for promotion of our connections with international community.
Mr. Tam and the delegation appreciated Prof. Gan’s sharing and they expressed that the information will be taken into consideration in relevant policy discussion.

全國人民代表大會常務委員會委員及港區全國人大代表譚耀宗先生於2023年1月9日帶領團隊到訪科大港澳海洋研究中心，出席成員包括新當選的香港全國人大代表黃冰芬女士，及立法會議員陳學鋒先生、何俊賢先生及周浩鼎先生。
香港科技大學校長葉玉如教授和港澳海洋研究中心主任甘劍平教授對代表團的到來表示歡迎。甘教授向譚先生和訪問團介紹香港水域目前面臨的挑戰，當中包括富營養化、缺氧和生態系統影響等海洋災害問題，並解釋香港水域大型填海工程對海洋環境的可能影響及其優化填海方案。
甘教授與譚先生的團隊探討了香港海洋的可持續發展，并指出海洋的可持續發展政策的制定應建立對海洋的科學認知基礎上。甘教授建議：「作為國際海洋城市、『一帶一路』和大灣區的重要城市，香港應建立具有國際水準的海洋研究機構進行海洋研究，指導海洋管理和輔助政策制定。」
甘教授又指出，港澳海洋研究中心為港澳海洋研究的組織和發展以及促進港澳與國際社會的聯繫，建立了堅實的基礎和框架。
譚先生和訪問團對甘教授的分享表示讚賞，表示相關信息將在有關政策討論中予以考慮。
